How lighting can affect your mood
Do you feel that you are not "quite yourself" when
there is a lack of light, but you do not understand exactly why? Have you
noticed how your mood seems to improve when you are in a brighter room or room give an attractive look or when
the weather is good? This is not due to your imagination. Studies have shown
that the level of light affects our mood. But how does light influence it and
how can you adjust the lighting in your home to improve it?
Low Light = Low Morale?
As mentioned above, low light levels affect how you feel.
Without going too much into the details of scientific terms, here are the two
substances that have a direct influence on our mood and morale: melatonin and
serotonin.
Melatonin is essential for controlling your sleep and waking
process and is usually higher around bedtime. It also helps control weight
gain.
Serotonin, on the other hand, has many features and acts on
sleep, appetite, memory, mood and the fight against depression. More precisely,
serotonin has a direct action on your happiness.
What is the effect of lighting?
There are two side effects, both psychological and
physiological, related to poor lighting. For example, low light conditions
affect the amount of melatonin that is produced, creating an imbalance in your
body. A high level of melatonin implies a low level of serotonin and therefore
a feeling of depression and drowsiness.
On the contrary, higher levels of light help maintain your
body's balance, increase your serotonin levels and are sometimes even used as a
therapy to relieve common emotional problems.
Increase the light!
How can you improve the mood in your home? Do you have to
flood it with sunlight to be in a good mood all the time? Not quite. Here are
some ways to brighten up your interior and get the most out of your new knowledge
of serotonin and melatonin.
